MCSA Interview Questions for 2025: Stay Ahead in IT Careers

The Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification remains one of the most prestigious certifications in the IT industry.

For those pursuing careers as system administrators, network engineers, or cloud specialists, the MCSA helps validate your ability to manage essential technologies, including Windows Server, SQL Server, Microsoft Azure, and cloud security.

In this blog, we will explore some of the most important MCSA interview questions for 2025, so you can be fully prepared for your next IT job interview.

Why MCSA Certification Matters in 2025

The MCSA certification is more than just a credential; it is an essential foundation for advancing your IT career. As businesses embrace cloud computing, security, and automation, MCSA validates your skills in both on-premise and cloud-based environments. Holding this certification will make you a valuable asset to any IT team, positioning you for promotions and higher-paying roles.

1. Why is there a difference between FAT32 and NTFS?

Answer: FAT32 is the earlier file system that is only compatible up to 2TB drives and lacks much security features. NTFS is newer, supports much larger drives, and also has additional things like file permissions, encryption, and recovery. For that reason, NTFS is used in most modern computers, but FAT32 is used only for such things as pen drives.

2. What is DNS used for in a Windows Server environment?

Answer: DNS is a phonebook for the internet. It converts names such as www.google.com into numbers known as IP addresses. Within a Windows Server, it allows computers within the same network to easily locate each other. If we did not have DNS, we would have to type numbers rather than names every time, which is confusing.

3. What is an IP address subnet mask and how do you calculate subnets?

Answer: An IP address is divided into two parts – the network part and the host part. The subnet mask indicates what part of the address represents the network and what part is used by devices. Subnetting is performed to separate a large network into smaller ones, thereby making it easier to handle. For instance, a mask of 255.255.255.0 indicates the first 24 bits represent the network part and the remaining 8 are hosts.

4. What is the function of the Schema Master of Active Directory?

Answer: Schema Master is a unique role within Active Directory. It is the server that can make changes to the schema, which is similar to rules governing what objects are present in AD. Modifying an object or adding a new attribute type can be done only there. There is a single Schema Master per forest.

5. What is a service account for a Windows Server and why do we use it?

Answer: A service account is a kind of account that is not for everyday people use. Rather, it is set up so services or programs can operate under it. It typically has less privileges than standard user accounts, so even if someone breaks into it, they can't do much damage.

6. What is the purpose of the SYSVOL folder in Active Directory?

Answer: SYSVOL is a shared folder that stores important files needed for Active Directory. These include logon scripts and Group Policy files. All domain controllers in a network must have the same SYSVOL, so it is always copied from one to another.

7. How do you troubleshoot DNS resolution issues?

Answer: First, I can attempt the nslookup command to determine whether DNS is resolving names correctly. Next, I can confirm whether the DNS server is running. I also need to verify whether zone settings are correctly configured. Clearing DNS cache or verifying forwarders may help sometimes as well. Alternatively, I can even test simple network connection using ping.

8. What is the difference between an IP address and a MAC address?

Answer: An IP address is a number assigned to devices on the network so they may be accessed. A MAC address is internal to the hardware of the network card and does not update. IP may vary based on connection, but MAC remains constant and is unique for each device.

9. What is Network Access Protection (NAP)?

Answer: NAP was a feature of Microsoft that verified whether computers were healthy before connecting to the network. For instance, it would verify whether antivirus was running or whether updates had been installed. If the computer failed, it was blocked or granted restricted access.

10. What is the purpose of the Print Server role?

Answer: A print server makes many users share printers. Rather than having everyone install the printer individually, they share it through the server. The print server also takes care of drivers, permissions, and who is permitted to print.

11. How do you secure Remote Desktop connections on Windows Server?

Answer: We can secure Remote Desktop by enabling Network Level Authentication, TLS encryption, and firewall rules that only permit some individuals. Enabling two-factor authentication will make it more difficult for hackers. Additionally, the use of a VPN will encrypt the connection.

12. What is PowerShell Remoting?

Answer: PowerShell Remoting allows you to execute commands on other machines across the network. It utilizes a called WinRM. This comes in handy for administrators that need to manage numerous systems simultaneously, since they don't have to be at each machine.

13. What is Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS)?

Answer: AD FS enables individuals to sign in and then access other apps or websites using the same account. This is referred to as single sign-on (SSO). It is most often employed when firms need to link their users to cloud apps without requesting another password.

14. What is a Site-to-Site VPN and when do you use it?

Answer: A Site-to-Site VPN allows two networks to be connected securely over the internet, such as a branch office to headquarters. It encrypts data so that it is kept confidential. This way, both offices are essentially on an internal network.

15. How do I set up high availability in Windows Server?

Answer: High availability refers to having services up and running even if a server crashes. It is achieved through Failover Clustering (so another server assumes its role), Network Load Balancing (so requests are made to lots of servers), and Storage Spaces Direct (so data is preserved across several servers).

16. How do Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and Backup Domain Controller (BDC) differ?

Answer: In the older Windows, PDC was the central login server and BDC was a backup in case PDC crashed. In new Windows Server, neither of these roles is present and all domain controllers are equal.

17. What is the function of a Global Catalog in Active Directory?

Answer: The Global Catalog contains partial data about every object within the forest, such as users and groups. It assists in accelerating searches and enables users to log on quickly even though their account details are from another domain.

18. How do you install a user profile within Windows Server?

Answer: A user profile saves an individual's files and settings. Local profile is usable on a single computer only. Roaming profile allows users to log in anywhere within the domain. A mandatory profile cannot be modified by users since it is read-only.

19. What is the function of a reverse proxy?

Answer: A reverse proxy server is a server between users and the real servers. It conceals the internal network setup, shields it, and can even assist in distributing incoming traffic so that no single server gets overloaded.

20. What is Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and how does it work?

Answer: WSUS makes it possible for only the server to download Microsoft updates a single time. All the computers in the firm then receive updates from this WSUS server. This conserves internet bandwidth and ensures updates are managed prior to installation.
